WILPF Costa Rica is calling for solidarity with the people of Nicaragua. Nicaraguan women have gathered under the name of the “Mothers of April” to denounce the killings during the current protests.

Since the violent demonstrations started in Managua in April 2018, more than 80 people have been killed.

Statement of LIMPAL-Section of Costa Rica

“Enough deaths! Not more killings!  We demand to President Ortega to stop repression ” With phrases like these, Nicaraguan women expressed their pain, in one of the many mobilizations that have taken place in Nicaragua, since April 19.

From the heartrending lamentations of mothers and fathers, who have lost their children, at the hands of the repressive forces, people have moved to organizing, an expression of this is the group “Mothers of April” that already summons a sit-in on Thursday 10 May in Managua, in what seems to be an enormous mobilization, which reminds us of the uncontainable strength of mothers in struggle, as was the experience of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo, and the various committees of the Central American 80’s

On behalf of the Costa Rican section of the International League of Women for Peace and Freedom (LIMPAL), we express our solidarity with the Nicaraguan people, students and other protesters seeking a change through peaceful actions, which call for conditions that make possible a fruitful dialogue.

At the same time, with respect, we ask both the opposition forces and the State to be consistent in rejecting actions that generate violence, which threaten the integrity and life of protesters. A great effort of studies and work for peace has been carried out for decades in Nicaragua. The student mobilizations have been unarmed.  Forces contrary to dialogue and peace  could undermine the beginning of a process that seeks changes, voices that ask and deserve to be heard.

LIMPAL, an organization of women with 103 years of existence, has been proud to carry from its birth the desire for freedom as an emblem of its very name. Its founders cried out without fear for peace, in the middle of World War I, a peace that is inconceivable without social justice. For that reason, it is simply natural for us to approach and support the Nicaraguan people, to show solidarity with the pain of those who have lost their children and to support  initiatives that promotes dialogue and peace.

We also sympathize with the resistance of the Masaya de Monimbó indigenous community that for centuries struggle to maintain their customs, traditions, citizen participation, freedom of expression, free access to economic opportunities, greater social justice and against marginalization in general.

From Costa Rica, our section will inform the rest of  women of the World, who share the same ideals of freedom, equality and social justice about the development of events in an impartial manner and with respect to all parties in conflict. It is our deep desire that this crisis becomes an opportunity for that heroic people to rescue the best of a legacy of decades of struggles for freedom, which has always strengthens its spirit of struggle with international solidarity.

We hope that the high-ranking officials in power in Nicaragua will reflect and open up space for true social dialogue, in a context free of violence, reprisals and disqualifications against dissident voices.

¡Solidaridad con el pueblo de Nicaragua!
Pronunciamiento de LIMPAL-Sección de Costa Rica

“¡Basta de muertes! ¡Que no nos matemos más!  Le pido al Presidente Ortega que pare la represión”. Con frases como éstas, manifestaban su dolor las mujeres nicaragüenses, en una de las tantas movilizaciones que han tenido lugar en Nicaragua, desde el 19 de abril.

De los lamentos desgarradores de madres y padres, que han perdido a sus hijos, a manos de las fuerzas represivas, han  pasado a la organización, una expresión de esto es el grupo “Madres de Abril” que  convoca ya a un plantón este jueves 10 de mayo en Managua, en lo que parece será una movilización enorme, que nos recuerda la fuerza incontenible de las madres en pie de lucha, como fue la experiencia de las Madres de la Plaza de Mayo, y los diversos comités de la Centroamérica de los años 80.

En nombre de la sección costarricense de la Liga Internacional de Mujeres pro Paz y Libertad (LIMPAL), hacemos expresa nuestra solidaridad con el pueblo Nicaragüense, estudiantes y otros manifestantes que buscan un cambio por medio de acciones pacificas, que claman por condiciones que posibiliten un diálogo fructífero.

A su vez, con respeto, pedimos tanto a las fuerzas de oposición, como al Estado,  ser consecuentes en rechazar  acciones que generen  violencia,  que atentan contra la integridad y la vida de manifestantes.  Un gran esfuerzo de estudios y trabajo por la paz se ha realizado por décadas  en Nicaragua. Las movilizaciones estudiantiles han sido sin armas. Intereses contrarios al diálogo, podrían menoscabar el inicio de un proceso que busca cambios, de voces que piden y merecen ser escuchadas.

LIMPAL, organización de mujeres con 103 años de existencia, se ha enorgullecido  de llevar desde su nacimiento el anhelo de libertad como emblema de su mismo nombre. Sus fundadoras clamaron sin miedo por la paz, en medio de la I Guerra Mundial, una paz que es inconcebible sin justicia social. Por eso, nos es simplemente natural acercarnos y apoyar  al pueblo nicaragüense, solidarizarnos con el dolor de quienes han perdido a sus hijos y apoyar toda iniciativa que promueva el diálogo y la paz.

También nos solidarizamos con la resistencia de la comunidad indígena Masaya de Monimbó que por siglos  luchan por mantener sus costumbres, tradiciones, participación ciudadana, la libertad de expresión, el libre acceso a oportunidades económicas, mayor justicia social y en contra de la marginalización en general.

Desde Costa Rica, nuestra sección informará al resto de mujeres del Mundo, que comparten los mismos ideales de libertad, de igualdad y justicia social sobre el desarrollo de los acontecimientos de forma imparcial y con respeto hacia todas las partes en conflicto. Es nuestro anhelo profundo que esta crisis se convierta en oportunidad para que ese heroico pueblo pueda rescatar lo mejor de un legado de décadas de luchas por la libertad, que siempre ha visto fortalecido su espíritu de lucha con la solidaridad internacional.

Deseamos que los altos mandos que ostentan el poder, en Nicaragua, reflexionen y abran espacio para un verdadero diálogo social, en un contexto libre de violencia, de represalias y de descalificaciones a las voces disidentes.
